Organic silicon coatings break through the 'impossible triangle': balancing environmental protection, performance, and cost

On March 15, 2025, Guangzhou - In the long-standing contradiction of "environmental protection performance cost" in the coatings industry, organic silicon technology has made a key breakthrough. The "water-based organic silicon modified polyurethane coating" developed by a certain enterprise has been applied in the Guangzhou Automobile New Energy Factory. Its salt spray resistance reaches 2000 hours, and its VOC emissions are only 1/5 of the national standard. The comprehensive cost is reduced by 18% compared to solvent based coatings.


Molecular Design: Reconstructing Material Genes
By introducing siloxane segments, coating molecules form a three-dimensional network structure during the film-forming process, which not only enhances chemical resistance but also endows it with self-healing function. Experiments have shown that when the scratch depth is ≤ 50 μ m, the material can automatically heal within 48 hours. At present, this technology has been extended to the field of ship anti fouling coatings, reducing ship resistance by 12% and improving fuel efficiency by 8%.


Policy dividend: Green procurement drives market expansion
With the implementation of the "Government Procurement Green Building Materials Standards" by the Ministry of Finance, the proportion of organic silicon coatings used in newly built public buildings nationwide will jump from 7% to 23% in the first quarter of 2025. It is expected that by 2027, the market size of environmentally friendly coatings in China will exceed 300 billion yuan, with organic silicon products accounting for over 40%.
