On October 29, 2025, Jinan, Shandong - Today, the world's first 10000 ton bio based silicone rubber production line was officially put into operation in Shandong, marking the complete liberation of the silicone industry from dependence on petroleum raw materials and entering a new stage of green and sustainable development. This production line was jointly built by a leading domestic enterprise and a research and development team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences after three years of research and development. It uses rice husk to produce highly active silane technology and converts agricultural waste into core raw materials for silicone rubber through biomass conversion technology. The cost is reduced by 15% compared to traditional petroleum based routes, and carbon emissions are reduced by 40%.
Technological Breakthrough: Biobased Materials Disrupt Industrial Logic
According to the project leader, this technology uses an enzymatic catalytic coupling process to convert silicon dioxide in rice husks into high-purity silane, which is then polymerized to produce biobased silicone rubber. According to data from the Institute of Materials Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, its product performance is comparable to petroleum based silicone rubber, but it performs better in terms of weather resistance and biocompatibility. It has passed the EU REACH certification and the US FDA food grade certification. At present, the annual production capacity of the production line reaches 12000 tons, and the products will be prioritized for high-end fields such as photovoltaic packaging and medical implant devices.
Industrial impact: Green transformation gives birth to new tracks
Industry experts point out that the large-scale production of bio based silicone rubber will reconstruct the organic silicon industry chain. On the one hand, on the raw material side, the price of agricultural waste such as rice husk and straw is only one-third of industrial silicon, which can reduce the cost of raw materials for enterprises; On the other hand, on the application side, under the pressure of the EU's "carbon tariff" policy, the export advantage of bio based materials is significant. Data shows that in the first three quarters of 2025, China's export volume of bio based organosilicon products increased by 220% year-on-year, accounting for 35% of the global market share.
Policy support: Green manufacturing becomes a hard indicator
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's "15th Five Year Plan for High Quality Development of the New Materials Industry" clearly states that by 2028, the proportion of bio based organosilicon in the total production capacity of the industry needs to reach 20%. As a domestic organic silicon industry cluster, Yongxiu County in Jiangxi Province has taken the lead in introducing supporting policies, providing triple subsidies for land, tax, and financing for bio based material projects.
